Did your child come home from school with the lice letter? Don’t worry. We’ll get you through this! In fact, eliminating a lice infestation is a lot less dramatic than you probably think. Why? Because all you need to do to rid your child’s head of lice and nits (lice eggs) is to physically remove them with the wet combing method.
When you visit the lice removal aisle at the store, you’ll see many products that claim to kill lice. And they do! But they don’t kill nits, and that’s why they don’t work. Nits are lice eggs and as long as they remain on the head, they will continue to hatch and produce more lice. That’s why physically removing the nits from the head with the wet combing method is the only way to eliminate a lice infestation!
Here’s what you need to say goodbye to lice and nits once-and-for-all:
Just your basic tap water will do the trick! The reason you want to keep your child’s hair wet is because lice freeze in place when they’re wet. That makes it easy to catch and remove them! Simply wash your child’s hair using their everyday shampoo and lightly towel dry their hair, keeping it damp.
After the hair is shampooed, you’ll coat it in conditioner. The purpose of the conditioner is to lubricate the hair and make it easier to comb through. Remember to not wash the conditioner out! Keep it in the hair during the entire wet combing process.
Once you’ve applied conditioner to your child’s head, you can use a wide-toothed comb to evenly spread it throughout the hair and remove any excess. It’ll also help remove tangles.
